FREE COMMUNITY WALKING CHALLENGE STARTS IN MAY

(Tahoe/Truckee, Calif.) – During the month of May Tahoe Forest Health System (TFHS) is offering a FREE month long walking fitness challenge, “10,000 Steps a Day for the Month of May”.  All Truckee/North Lake Tahoe residents are welcome to join as individuals or as a team.  Here’s how the challenge will work.

Getting started is easy! First, make a mental promise to be committed to the challenge and to have some fun.  Grab a buddy for support. Then call the Tahoe Center for Health and Sports Performance at 530.587.3769 to register.  Registration is FREE, and participants can purchase pedometers at the Center. For just a small fee, you can own your own pedometer that could help aid in a lifetime of lasting fitness. Participants can participate in either the individual or team challenge (up to four participants per team). You make the choice and start walking.

Walking Challenge participants receive weekly health and fitness tips; entry into a weekly raffle for turning in step totals, and a Grand prize is awarded to the  most improved, “MVP”,  (team and individual logging the most steps) along with awarding the “most improved” (team and individual showing the largest increase in weekly step totals).

“Physical activity should be an integral part of each individual's plan for their overall health. The best exercise program is one that’s fun and one you may enjoy with a friend, co-worker of family member because then you’re more likely to stick with it,” said Liz Schenk, group exercise coordinator, Tahoe Center for Health and Sports Performance. “Start walking in April to get those legs and lungs prepared, so you’re ready to take, or WIN, the challenge in May!”

The benefits of walking 10,000 steps a day are significant. They include weight and body fat loss; a decrease in hip circumference; an increase in HDL (good) cholesterol and a lower body mass index (BMI).  The 10,000 steps don’t have to be performed on a track or trail.  They can include shuffling back and forth from your desk to the photo-copier or the coffee machine as well as a hurried sprint to catch the bus or even your toddler!
