Donor Stories

linda and mike rooney

When Linda and Michael Rooney decided to relocate to the Lake Tahoe area, one thing was clear – they had to make sure Linda’s healthcare was a priority. On the recommendation of her previous physician, her care was successfully transferred to Dr. Koppel, Medical Director at our Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. Below, read Linda’s personal story of gratitude, and learn why she and Michael use philanthropy to help pay their appreciation forward:

“In the Spring of 2015, my husband Michael and I became full-time residents on the East Shore of Lake Tahoe. At the time of our transition into retirement, my previous physician, Dr. Berenson, referred us to the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center, regarding it as an outstanding facility with amazing doctors who would become partners in my ongoing multiple myeloma care. I was readily accepted as a patient, and I shall never forget our first visit to the Cancer Center, where I personally met Dr. Koppel and her wonderful team of professionals. Everyone was incredibly welcoming, compassionate, reassuring, and gracious. We both felt at home with this new circle of friends and family to support us.

Michael and I were able to take advantage of many of the ancillary services and offerings supported by the Foundation. We attended a Multiple Myeloma Support Group and participated in both acupuncture and massage, which were valuable in supporting the mind, body, and soul. We appreciated these opportunities more than we could have imagined. It is impossible for us to fully express our gratitude, incredible fulfillment, and thankfulness for the amazing support, kindness, professional guidance, and service provided by the entire Tahoe Forest Cancer Center and Foundation teams!

We have made so many friends who have left their footprints in our hearts that shall always be cherished. With my required infusion treatments scheduled every 14 days, our relationships with everyone at the Cancer Center have become a part of us. We love the care, support, professionalism, graciousness, and compassion we feel each and every time we walk into our ‘home away from home.’ We believe that seeing and feeling the powers that lie before us - and within us -make anything and everything possible!”

Thank you, Linda and Michael, for sharing the story of your healthcare journey, and for giving gifts in honor of the care you have received at the Gene Upshaw Memorial Tahoe Forest Cancer Center. It is with giving like yours that we can continue to help enhance cancer care services for patients!
