Blood Flow Restriction (BFR)
There is an old joke that PT stands for “Pain and Torture.” That is certainly not our objective at Tahoe Forest Hospital, but we understand the sentiment. Our physical therapists have many tools in our toolkit to reduce pain associated with rehabbing injuries, and one of the most exciting tools is Blood Flow Restriction, or BFR. BFR is a bio-hacking technique that maximizes gains from high reps of easy exercises. It’s a great choice for patients who have strict weight-bearing limitations or who struggle with more vigorous exercises due to pain.
BFR works through the application of a blood pressure cuff (almost like a tourniquet) around the affected limb while easy exercises are performed for around 15 minutes. The cuff is loose enough that arterial blood can continue to flow into the limb, but it’s tight enough that venous blood has a hard time flowing out. The muscles swell with blood that has been de-oxygenated and is full of metabolic byproducts like lactic acid. This tricks your body into thinking that you’ve just done an incredibly hard workout resulting in faster rates of muscle growth. In this way, BFR can help our patients get “swole” without having to push into heavy resistance training before it’s comfortable.
