Don’t Skip the Check

Well Child visits matter more than you think

As sports season approaches, many families turn to quick sports physicals for clearance, but these brief visits don’t cover everything your child needs.

A Well Child Check is a full annual health exam that includes:

  • A head-to-toe physical exam
  • Vision, hearing, and developmental screenings
  • Immunization review and updates
  • Mental health, growth, and behavioral assessments
  • Guidance on sleep, nutrition, school, and safety

While a sports physical focuses only on athletic clearance, a Well Child Check looks at the whole child’s health, now and for the future. Good news: a Well Child Check typically also fulfills the sports physical requirement!

One visit. Total care. A healthier season ahead.

Contact your child’s primary care or pediatric provider to schedule their Well Child Check.

Dr. Nina Winans

Sports Medicine Physician

With a 31-year career at Tahoe Forest Health System, I have had the privilege of helping shape the direction of community health, sports medicine, and wellness services across our region.

Shortly after joining the medical staff, I stepped into a leadership role as Medical Director for Health Promotions (now Wellness). Over the years, this evolved into oversight for the Center for Health and Sports Performance. From these early days, I’ve been a vocal advocate for the importance of strong medical leadership, and I am proud to have contributed to the groundwork that led to our current Dyadic leadership model.

In 2005, I formally took on the role of Medical Director for Sports Medicine and Therapy Services—joining Therapy and Wellness under one roof to better integrate care. This role allowed me to further develop outreach initiatives, including injury prevention and concussion baseline testing programs for local schools and ski teams.

What began as a solo effort has grown into a robust outreach program, thanks to collaboration with Physical Therapy and the support of hospital leadership. Today, our team includes five full-time Certified Athletic Trainers who provide critical services to student-athletes and community sports programs throughout the region.

After more than 30 years of service, I will be retiring on January 7th, 2026. It has been an honor to work alongside such passionate colleagues and to serve this incredible community.

Outside of work, I love a good book and exploring trails and slopes on foot, on bike, and on skies. I am grateful to share this special mountain life with my husband and our three amazing adult daughters.

I couldn’t ask for a better place to practice medicine and to raise a family!

Physical therapy for shoulder relief: Paddle without pain

Shoulder pain can put a damper on your paddleboarding adventures, especially when it starts to limit your strokes or lingers after time on the water.

The physical therapists at Tahoe Forest Health System take a comprehensive approach to identifying the root cause of your discomfort, whether it stems from muscle imbalances, poor posture, limited mobility, or repetitive strain. We provide hands-on treatment, targeted exercises to improve shoulder strength and stability, and guidance on proper paddling mechanics.

With a customized physical therapy plan, we help you recover, prevent future injury, and get back to enjoying Tahoe’s lakes with confidence and comfort.

Injury Prevention Corner

Strengthen your stroke: Preventing or relieving paddleboard shoulder pain

Paddleboarding relies heavily on shoulder strength, stability, and control. When these muscles are weak or imbalanced—or when mobility is limited—overuse and poor mechanics can lead to pain and injury.

Whether you’re recovering from an injury or trying to prevent one, these exercises are designed to get you back on the board with better form, more power, and lasting shoulder health.
