Overview
Smoking is the leading cause of preventable disease worldwide. It damages nearly every organ in the body and is the primary cause of lung cancer and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). Smoking also contributes to coronary heart disease, stroke, and many other cancers and illnesses.

Goal
Reduce the proportion of adults who smoke from the baseline of 7.7% (2021) to the Healthy People 2030 target of 6.1% by June 30, 2029.
Target Population
Adults 18+
Adult Smoking chart description: Chart shows that 7.7% of adults smoked in 2021, according to the 2021 Community Health Needs Assessment, versus 9.3% of adults smoked in 2025, which is above the Healthy People 2030 target of 6.1%. Improvement for this chart is decreasing the percentage of adult smokers.
