District History

Old Building

Tahoe Forest Hospital District was founded in 1949 by the residents it serves and has become a symbol of the community's historic dedication to excellence in healthcare. The District is governed by a five-member Board of Directors elected by the voters of the Tahoe Forest Hospital District.

Tahoe Forest Hospital is a 35-bed, not-for-profit healthcare facility serving a wide range of patients. The hospital is fully accredited by the Healthcare Accreditation Facilities Program and licensed by the State of California Department of Health Services.

Over the years, Tahoe Forest Hospital District has grown in many ways. The most significant milestones in the District’s history are – in 1952 the original building was completed and opened, in 1966 a two story addition for radiology and the medical / surgical unit was opened. In 1978 the emergency department wing was added, and in 1986 the District opened a 37 bed Skilled Nursing Unit that provides long-term inpatient care to the area’s residents. In 1990 the Surgery Center was opened and an on-site center providing childcare for children ages zero to ten was completed; in 1993 the emergency department was renovated and expanded to keep pace with the area’s growing needs. In 1996 the District purchased Incline Village Health Center, an eight-bed healthcare facility, located in Incline Village, Nevada. In 2000, the Center received its new license from the Bureau of Licensure and Certification as a Critical Access Hospital and has modernized its name to reflect its new standing. The Center has become Incline Village Community Hospital.

Originally a single-story, 10,000 square-foot structure with eleven beds, Tahoe Forest Hospital has expanded to include 35 acute care beds and 37 long-term care beds. With the Western Addition the facility grew to roughly 115,000 square feet.

Tahoe Forest Hospital is the only healthcare facility in more than a 50-mile radius serving a full-time population of approximately 40,000 residents with influxes of up to an additional 30,000 tourists during peak periods.
