Hi, my name is Dr. Kari Rezac, Director of Sports Medicine at Tahoe Forest Health System. At Tahoe Forest Hospital, we know that concussions can be very overwhelming, whether it happens at home, on the field, or on the slopes. That’s why we made a team-based approach to concussion care.
A concussion is just a type of brain injury. It’s a mild brain injury that can come with a bunch of different symptoms, and they’re different for each person. It can be dizziness, lightheadedness, blurry vision, or feeling upset in the stomach. All of those are different per person. And here at Tahoe Forest, we’re here to start from the injury and get you all the way through to recovery.
If you know somebody who’s had a concussion, a friend, a child, a family member, go ahead and get them the help that they need. That means either go to the urgent care, the ED, or get in with your primary care provider. So, after your first visit, let’s say in the ED or the urgent care, you’ll get a call from the concussion navigator. The concussion navigator is going to help guide you through each of the steps from the first injury to recovery.
After we get you into your primary care physician, your pediatrician, or the sports medicine physician, then it unlocks a big team of people who are ready to help you get to your next step in your concussion recovery process. That means it could be referral to PT, OT, speech, neurology, neuropsychology, and the list goes on. But we’re here to help you.
We’re also super proud to have our certified athletic trainers in all of our local high schools and our ski teams. They’re often the first to spot these concussions and start early care. That means they’re not just cleared, they’re cared for. Because concussion recovery isn’t about just waiting it out. It’s about getting the right care at the right time.
