Every January, we get flooded with social media posts and marketing emails about weight loss. Why is it that everyone feels weight loss needs to be a new year’s resolution?
As a registered dietitian, I have 2 problems with this social construct: 1) EVERY DAY is a great day to set and follow through with health-related goals, for the sake of feeling great and improving overall health unrelated to weight, 2) Promoting weight loss as the end-all goal to help everyone in the world achieve happiness is just plain wrong: it’s the “diet mentality” (also known as “diet culture”) at its worst.
